A real, honest guide for parents navigating this question
If you’re a parent of a child on the spectrum, you’ve probably asked this at some point:
“Should my child have an EEG?”
And the answer is not always straightforward.
At West Wave Neuro, we see this question often. So let’s walk through it in a way that actually makes sense.
Autism Itself Does NOT Show on an EEG
An Electroencephalography (EEG) does not diagnose autism.
Autism is a developmental condition. It’s diagnosed through behavior, communication patterns, and developmental history, not brain waves.
So if you’re wondering: “Will an EEG confirm autism?” The answer is no.
But here’s where it does matter…
What an EEG CAN Show in Children with Autism
Even though autism itself doesn’t show up on an EEG, many children on the spectrum can have co-occurring neurological activity that does.
An EEG can detect:
1. Seizure Activity
Children with Autism spectrum disorder have a higher rate of seizures compared to the general population.
Some seizures are obvious. Others are silent or subtle.
An EEG can pick up:
Overt seizures
Subclinical (silent) seizure activity
Abnormal electrical discharges during sleep
2. Abnormal Brain Wave Patterns
We sometimes see:
Slowing in certain brain regions
Irregular firing patterns
Sleep-related abnormalities
These don’t diagnose autism, but they can explain behaviors that feel confusing or sudden.
3. Sleep Disturbances
Sleep is a big one.
If your child:
Wakes frequently
Seems restless
Has night episodes you can’t explain like night terrors, laughing, waking up confused.
An EEG (especially overnight) can show what the brain is doing during those moments.
When Should You Consider an EEG?
This is the part most parents actually need.
At West Wave Neuro, we usually recommend looking deeper if you’re seeing:
Signs to Watch For
Staring spells or “zoning out”
Sudden behavioral changes or regression
Episodes of unresponsiveness
Repetitive movements that seem different than baseline stimming
Sudden aggression or confusion without a clear trigger
Nighttime events (jerking, waking confused, unusual movements, unusual laughing episodes)
Loss of skills (speech, interaction, motor skills)
Not every child needs an EEG. But when something feels off beyond typical spectrum behaviors, it’s worth investigating.
Why We Often Recommend Ambulatory EEG
Here’s where things really matter.
Traditional EEGs are:
Short (often ~20–30 minutes)
Done in a clinical setting
Limited snapshot of brain activity
At West Wave Neuro, we focus on Ambulatory EEG—and there’s a reason for that.
Because real life matters.
With ambulatory EEG:
Your child is in their own home
In their normal environment
Following their real routines
Sleeping in their own bed
We obtain MORE data which means more possible answers
And that changes everything.
We’re not just capturing a moment. We’re capturing patterns.
Why Home EEG Is Especially Important for Autism
Let’s be honest…
For many kids on the spectrum:
New environments can be overwhelming
Sensory sensitivity is real
Clinical settings can change behavior
So when we bring EEG into the home, we often get:
More accurate data
Fewer disruptions
A calmer experience for both child and parent
And this is something we’ve seen again and again.
What the Process Looks Like (From Our Side)
We try to make this as smooth as possible because we know this isn’t easy.
At West Wave:
We come to you or set up in a comfortable environment
We take our time with placement (especially for sensory-sensitive kids)
We handle all monitoring and troubleshooting behind the scenes
You focus on keeping your child comfortable
Once you’re set up:
Monitoring runs continuously (24–72+ hours depending on the case)
You live your normal life
You press the event button if something happens
We track everything in real time
The Goal Isn’t Just Data — It’s Answers
A lot of parents come to us not knowing exactly what they’re looking for.
They just know: “Something doesn’t feel right.”
And that’s enough.
EEG helps answer questions like:
Is this neurological?
Is there seizure activity?
Is sleep impacting behavior?
Do we need to escalate care?
If your child has autism, an EEG is not routine.
But in the right situations, it can be incredibly valuable.
At West Wave Neuro, we believe in:
Meeting patients where they are
Keeping things simple and supportive
Getting real answers without adding more stress
Because your child’s comfort matters and your peace of mind does too.
