Can fireworks trigger a seizure?

The answer depends on the type of epilepsy a person has.
For most people living with epilepsy, fireworks are not a seizure trigger. However, for individuals with photosensitive epilepsy, certain flashing lights may provoke seizures under the right circumstances.
What Is Photosensitive Epilepsy?
Photosensitive epilepsy is a form of reflex epilepsy in which seizures can be triggered by flashing or flickering lights, high-contrast visual patterns, or rapidly changing images.
It is estimated that only a small percentage of people with epilepsy are photosensitive, meaning most individuals with epilepsy are not affected by flashing lights.
For those who are photosensitive, however, understanding potential triggers is an important part of managing their condition.
Why Can Fireworks Be a Trigger?
Fireworks create bursts of bright light against a dark night sky. Certain fireworks may produce repetitive flashes at frequencies that can stimulate the visual cortex, the part of the brain responsible for processing what we see.
For someone with photosensitive epilepsy, these flashing patterns have the potential to trigger abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Not every fireworks display presents the same level of risk. Factors that may increase the likelihood of a photosensitive response include:
Rapidly repeating flashes
Bright white flashes against a dark background
Looking directly at the display for an extended period
Being close to large fireworks displays
Multiple synchronized fireworks exploding in quick succession
Many traditional fireworks produce irregular flashes, which are generally less likely to provoke seizures than repetitive strobe lights. However, every individual is different, and people with known photosensitivity should exercise caution.
Who Is Most Likely to Be Affected?
Photosensitive epilepsy is most commonly diagnosed in:
Children
Teenagers
Young adults
Many individuals become less sensitive to flashing lights as they get older, although some remain photosensitive throughout adulthood.
If you have never experienced a seizure triggered by flashing lights, fireworks are unlikely to suddenly become a trigger. However, anyone with known photosensitive epilepsy should discuss individualized recommendations with their neurologist.
How Can You Reduce Your Risk?
If you have photosensitive epilepsy but still want to enjoy a fireworks show, there are several precautions that may help reduce exposure to flashing light triggers.
Consider:
Watching from a greater distance
Avoiding direct, prolonged staring at the fireworks
Looking away if a sequence of rapid flashing begins
Wearing polarized or dark-tinted sunglasses if recommended by your physician
Sitting where trees, buildings, or other objects partially block the display
Leaving the area if you begin to notice warning symptoms
While these strategies cannot eliminate risk entirely, they may help reduce visual stimulation for some individuals.
What Symptoms Should You Watch For?
Some people with photosensitive epilepsy experience warning signs before a seizure, while others do not.
Possible symptoms may include:
Visual disturbances
Eye discomfort
Sudden dizziness
Muscle jerks
Brief staring episodes
Loss of awareness
Generalized convulsions

How Is Photosensitive Epilepsy Diagnosed?
One of the primary tools neurologists use to evaluate photosensitive epilepsy is an electroencephalogram (EEG).
During an EEG, patients may undergo intermittent photic stimulation, a standard part of many EEG studies. This involves a specialized flashing light placed in front of the patient's closed or open eyes at different flash frequencies while brain activity is recorded.
The purpose is to determine whether flashing lights produce abnormal electrical responses in the brain.
Not everyone who is sensitive to bright lights will have photosensitive epilepsy, and not everyone with epilepsy will respond to photic stimulation during an EEG. The results are interpreted alongside a patient's symptoms and medical history.
Can an Ambulatory EEG Diagnose Photosensitive Epilepsy?
A routine EEG with photic stimulation is often the first test used to evaluate suspected photosensitive epilepsy because the flashing light can be safely controlled in a clinical setting.
However, if a patient's symptoms continue despite a normal routine EEG, a neurologist may recommend a 24- to 72-hour ambulatory EEG to evaluate brain activity over a longer period of time. While ambulatory EEGs are not designed to recreate fireworks or flashing-light exposure, they can provide additional information if seizures or concerning events occur outside the clinic.
Enjoying Fireworks Safely
For most people living with epilepsy, fireworks can still be enjoyed safely. Photosensitive epilepsy is relatively uncommon, and not every flashing light is capable of triggering a seizure.
